Battle of Sheriffmuir

St Andrews Day Rally 2009

Hi Folk's, this weekend I attended the annual commemoration for the Battle of Sheriffmuir with Clann Gaidhealach of which I am a member. The weather was very cold and dreich but a quite few brave souls came out for the commemoration. There was various groups in attendance and the Scottish Templar Knights led the service at the monument. The Battle of Sheriffmuir as a whole was indecisive. The Earl of Mar simply withdrew his troops back to Perth. The rebellion continued for some weeks more, but was effectively ended by Sheriffmuir. Even the late arrival of the Old Pretender on 22 December 1715 could not turn the Jacobites' fortunes around. He returned to France just six weeks later and never set foot in Scotland again. This was a bad day for the Clan Macrae who fought bravely but by nightfall on the day of the battle, there were fifty-eight new widows in Kintail.

Battle of Killiekrankie

Myself and Clann Gaidhealach attended the 320th commemoration of the Battle of Killiecrankie. We then took the route the Jacobites marched to face the foe. After the march we conregated at the top of the brae overlooking the battlefield were words were said before charging down the brae .We then went grave of the fallen where a wreath was laid and single red and white roses were laid after short service. Then went to the grave of Bonnie Dundee where we had a short service and wreath was laid at his grave. We had a good sunny day for the occasion and had good walk and the banter was good.

Bannockburn

Myself and Clann Gaidhealach along with Knights Templars attended a ceremony to commemerate the battle of Bannockburn 1314. Ken Shirra gave a service and a prayer and there were wreaths laid. Afterwards a talk with some friends and I had look in visiter centre. Then in the evening had change of highland attire and went chinese meal and had good night .

Culloden 2009

I attended the Annual Culloden Remembrance service on Satarday April 18th held by the Gaelic Society on Culloden Battlefield. The Rev MacLeod performed the service in Gaelic and English for those in attendance. There was a lament played on the bagpipes and wreaths were laid around the monument. The Battle of Culloden was fought on Drumossie Moor, outside Inverness, on April 16th, 1746. It was to be the last of the Jacobite uprisings - popular attempts to reinstate the Stuart monarchy to the throne of Great Britian and was led by Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie. There was a good attendance and afterwards I had a look around the battlefield with other members of Clann Gaidhealach. I then spent sometime in the visitor centre. We then had an enjoyable evening in Lossiemouth.

Rob Roy MacGregor Commemoration

I was at the Rob Roy event this weekend with Clann Gaidhealach and Na Fir Dileas. We met the hotel car park and set off from there to Rob Roy's grave. Then there was a short service then we marched back to the King's House Hotel for a bowl of hot soup and a dram to toast this great Jacobite.
